Obituary

Audie Mae Thomas Sonnenburg, age 93, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family, on June 17, 2022, in Longview Texas. Audie's story began on October 10, 1928, the third of four children, born to Charles Leon and Emma Mae Posey Myers, in Gilmer, Texas.

Audie is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Frank Jack Thomas, second husband, Raymond L (Duke) Sonnenburg, her beloved daughter, Teresa Joy (T.J.) Etchison, brothers, Parley Myers and Charles Myers and sister, Bobbie Finney. She is survived by her beloved son, Guy (Rap) Thomas and wife Lynn of Nacogdoches Texas. Her grand joys, grandson, Jack Thomas and wife Tredessa of Waco Texas, granddaughter, Kelly Curbow and husband Michael of Lindale Texas, great grandchildren, Haley Curbow and fiancé Keiston Ross, Jake Curbow, Jaxon Thomas, Sadie Thomas, and Kacie Curbow. Also surviving are former son-in-law, Gerry (Etch) Etchison and family of Lubbock and a sister-in-law, Mary Myers & family of Olton,Texas.

Audie learned her strong work ethic as a very young child picking cotton in the Panhandle cotton fields for survival during the Great Depression of the 1930's. It was in the West Texas town of Olton where she graduated high school and met and married her high school sweetheart Frank Jack Thomas. She was lovingly welcomed into the farming family, the Thomases, as well as the local Church of Christ which she frequented. Together they worked the farm and raised their two children to adulthood. Tragically, she lost Jack in a vehicle accident in their mid 40's and Audie once again put her work ethic to task as the local Municipal Judge and a tax accountant, assisting many local farm families manage their income taxes.

In 1980, she met and married the wonderful Duke Sonnenburg of Levelland, an educator, friend and coworker of her daughter and son-in- law.  They made their home in Levelland and lived a life of world-wide travel & adventure every chance they got. They loved family holiday get togethers and sending for their grandchildren for summer visits where much bonding took place.

Audie's life once again turned tragic in her 80's with the loss of  her siblings & her beloved Duke & TJ. But as always she soldiered on, eventually moving into a retirement complex in Lubbock and then in recent months to an assisted living center in Longview, in order to be closer to her loved ones, as her mobility became challenged.

Audie loved the Lord, her family, nice clothing, good chocolate, travel, fine jewelry, good manners, Duke's homemade pimento cheese with pickles, a nice beef filet cooked medium rare, games of any kind but especially dominoes, and Abuelos Mexican food with extra guacamole. Not one to ever complain, even under the most dire of circumstances, she became a favorite of friends & caregivers, at the same time a true mentor to her children & grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to special friend Gwen Warren & husband Phil of Lubbock for going above and beyond in aiding & loving Audie. Also to her caregivers at assisted living center, Arabella of Longview, for their special love and care as well as the Prime Care Hospice of E Tx staff, true blessings in every way.

Private burial services are under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors, in Olton, Texas, with Mr. Dallas Carrasco officiating. A public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any local hospice of choice.
