Obituary

Gary Kelley, 61, of Lubbock and formerly of Olton, died Wednesday, September 17, 2014, in Lubbock. Services will be at 2:30 P.M., Saturday, September 20, at the First Baptist Church in Olton with Dr. David Wilson, senior pastor at Southcrest Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Olton Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors.

Gary was born September 29, 1952, in Slaton to Bill and Billie (Hoover) Kelley. He graduated from Olton High School and earned the Lone Star Farmer Award in 1971. On January 30, 1972, he married Dona Sorley in Olton. He served on the Olton Baseball Association board of directors, coached, and was inducted in to the Hall of Fame in 2010. Gary was very active in the Olton Stock Show. He raised animals, helped many kids with their animals, and had the Olton Stock Show dedicated to him in 2006. He farmed for over 30 years in the Olton area. In 2004, he moved to Lubbock and was a member of Southcrest Baptist Church. He loved woodworking, gardening, glass flamework, and especially loved teaching and listening to his grandchildren. His most cherished gifts were his grandchildren and he will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Dona Kelley of Lubbock, sons, Chris Kelley and Lorie of Olton and Douglas Anderson of Olton, daughters, Jennifer Johnson and her husband, Jason of Lubbock, Michelle Leathers and her husband, Ryan of Olton, and Ashley Turbeville and her husband, Scott of New York City, one brother, Brad Kelley of Queen Creek, Arizona, and a sister, Vicki Lindsay of Georgetown. He was blessed with seven grandchildren, Brendon, Carson, Connor, Jayden, Shaylee Pearl, Kristian (expected in October), and Emma (expected in January).

The family will receive friends at the Sorley home 1301 W. 7th in Olton from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Friday, September 19.
