February 17, 1923 – January 17, 2020
Gilbert Daryl Roberson passed from this life on Friday, January 17, 2020 at the age of 96. He was born February 17, 1923 in Lockney, TX to Frank and Beulah Whitlock Roberson. He was the baby of the family, growing up with 3 brothers: F.A., Lem, and T.J.
Memorial services will be Monday, January 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Olton, TX, followed by a time of celebration and visitation in the Fellowship Hall. He will be laid to rest in a private family gathering at Olton Cemetery preceding the service with arrangements under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors.
Gilbert was a veteran, serving in the US Air Force as a flight officer from 1940-1945. He married Shirlie Rae Floyd from Lockney, TX on April 22, 1946. They had a daughter, Donna, and a son, Scott. Gilbert and Shirlie moved to Olton in 1947, with his brothers' families, each buying a quarter of a section of land. With his trademark cigar firmly clinched in his mouth, he loved playing golf and fishing, but his passion was farming. He actively farmed until he was 84 years old. He was honored as Olton's Chamber of Commerce Farmer of the Year in 1980.
Gilbert served the community on the Olton ISD school board, the Olton Co-op Gin Board and the Olton Country Club. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Olton. Gilbert loved the mountains and took his family to Lake City, CO every year for jeeping and fishing.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Beulah Roberson; a sister, Loleta Roberson; and brothers F.A. Roberson, Lem Roberson, and T.J. Roberson.
Gilbert is survived by his wife Shirlie of Olton; a daughter, Donna Barnes of Lubbock; a son, Scott Roberson and wife Pam of Olton; 3 grandchildren: Ty Aldridge of Lubbock, Derek Roberson and wife Laurie of Olton, and Joni Buzarde and husband Brian of Buena Vista, CO; and 2 great-grandsons Max and Dash Buzarde of Buena Vista, CO.
