Jack Burkhalter, 94, of Olton, died Tuesday, August 11, 2020, in Lubbock. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 14, 2020, at Olton Cemetery with Mr. Joe Carrasco and Mr. Rex Boyles officiating and under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors. Viewing will be held from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, August 13, 2020, at Ramage Funeral Directors in Olton.
Jack was born April 21, 1926, in Throckmorton, Texas, to Joe and Mary (Neely) Burkhalter. In 1944, Jack enlisted in the United States Army and was deployed to France. He went over to France on the Queen Mary and was part of Company E, 242nd infantry, the Rainbow Division. While fighting in France, Jack was injured and was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. After his discharge from the Army, Jack married the love of his life, Anne Gordon, on August 14, 1946. He moved to Olton in 1962 from Colorado City, Texas, and was a member of Main Street Church of Christ where he served as an elder and a deacon. Jack taught science and was a counselor for Olton ISD before becoming a counselor and principal for Hart ISD. Jack was a former member of the Olton Lions Club, the Olton Booster Club, and served on the Olton Stock Show board. He genuinely loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and will be greatly missed.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anne Burkhalter, in 2013, one brother, and two sisters.
He is survived by his son, Jackie Burkhalter and wife Valda of Olton, two daughters, Judy Walker of Austin and Jan Tice and husband Perry of Aurora, CO, and a sister, Peggy Lane of Arlington. He was blessed with seven grandchildren: Kellie, Shannon, Joy, Ashley, Lacy, Lindy, and Lesly and 16 great-grandchildren: Andrew, Ben, Sara, Hannah, Landen, Lainy, Lilly, Logan, Kinzy, Karter, Kaden, Wyatt, Waylen, Isabella, Gabe, and Vivienne.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Runningwater Draw Care Center PO Box 409 Olton, Texas 79064 or the Olton Volunteer Ambulance Association PO Box 1087 Olton, Texas 79064.
