James was born March 7, 1933, in Erath County, near Stephenville,Texas, to Charley and Leona (Edwards) Martin. He graduated from Olton High School in 1951.  In 1955, James married his high school sweetheart, Nora Lee "Wozey" Wozencraft and she preceded him in death in 2002. James drove a truck for Jefferies Lumber in Olton before moving to Austin in 1972.  He was a brick and block layer and owned and operated Martin & Haney Masonry, in Austin, for many years.

A member of Olton Methodist Church, James was also a Scottish Rite Mason and 60-year member of Olton Masonic Lodge #1257. James loved to listen and dance to music by Ernest Tubbs and Hank Williams. He enjoyed watching football, especially the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns. James always found ways to stay busy. He had an unbelievable vegetable garden and was always tinkering in his shop. Going RV camping with his brother, Charles Martin, was another one of his favorite things to do.  James cherished his time spent with family and never missed an opportunity to come "home" to Olton to visit.

James was also preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Leona Martin, and his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Wanda Martin.

Survivors include his son, Keith Martin and wife Donna of Salado, and two daughters, Rhonda Johnson and husband Glenn of Portales and Kayla Quinn of Portales.  He was blessed with eight grandchildren: Bryce, Lindy, Tyson, Tyler, Tara, Kriston, Kelsey, and Cody, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Olton Cemetery Association PO Box 1055 Olton, Texas 79064.
