IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jimmy William
Cannon, Jr.
November 18, 1952 – January 10, 2022
Graveside services were held in Olton, Texas at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2022, in Olton Memorial Cemetery, for Jimmy William Cannon, Jr., 69, of Houston, Texas. Services were conducted by Ramage Funeral Directors of Olton. Officiating and in charge of transfer was Dale Carter, of Galveston, Texas, cousin of the deceased, and Tina Robbins, both representatives of Carnes Funeral Home of Texas City.
Jimmy Cannon was born on November 18, 1952 in Waxahachi, Texas. He suffered a major stroke in July, and had improved significantly; then succumbed to a second stroke in October and subsequently died January 10, 2022 in Spring, Texas.
Cannon was the son of the late Sue Cannon of Olton, and the late Jim Cannon, of Mansfield, Texas. Attending the majority of his grade school years in Mansfield, he also attended schools in Indiana and Illinois. After his parents' divorce, Jimmy moved with his mother and five siblings to Olton when he was 11 years old, graduating from Olton High School in 1971. Following graduation, he enrolled in Texas A&M University at College Station. He was also a student, for a few semesters, at Lubbock Christian College in Lubbock, Texas.
Having friends and family in the "flying business", Jimmy became interested in aviation. Moving to Amarillo, he received certification as an avionic technician at Texas State Technical Institute. He then began a long career span as a computer network engineer with Continental Airlines, transferring from Amarillo to Houston. He later accepted a government assignment within the airline industry and relocated to the island of Guam, where he lived for a number of years. Following the merge between Continental and United, he found himself back in Houston, where he recently retired from United Airlines.
While working in Amarillo, he met Vicky Herring, and together they raised her two daughters, Tamera and Courtney, eventually making their home in Houston. Upon taking the assignment in Guam, the family separated, but his greatest joy in life was being a family man and "PawPaw".
People close to Jimmy, knew him for his sarcastic humor, his overwhelming generosity, and his political satire and opinions. A former student of Harold Dean Carson, Jimmy enjoyed playing the piano. He also enjoyed repairing or building just about anything mechanical or electrical. A licensed pilot, he loved to fly and traveled extensively. He loved life and was determined to get back "to normal" following his stroke. Due to the ongoing pandemic, shortage of staff and healthcare workers, he was put on waiting lists, and literally ran out of time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Scott Cannon, and a nephew, Joseph Alcorta.
He is survived by two sisters, Susan Cannon Wiggains and her husband, David of Canyon; and Debbie Cannon Alcorta and her husband, Joe of Olton; and two brothers, Guy Cannon of Atlanta, Georgia; and Gregg Cannon and his wife, Michelle Cowell Cannon of Conroe, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Olton Volunteer Ambulance Association.
