Jolene Shafer, 86, of Levelland and formerly of Olton, died Tuesday, October 12, 2021, in Lubbock, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 15, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church in Olton with Pastor Kyle Brock officiating. Interment will follow at Olton Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 14, 2021, at Ramage Funeral Directors in Olton.
Jolene was born December 8, 1934, in Olton, Texas, to Melvin and Edisy (Lawson) Wozencraft. A proud graduate of Olton High School in 1953, Jolene married the love of her life, Freddie Bob Burgess, on June 7, 1953. She worked as a legal secretary for Andy Stroebel for over 30 years before retiring in 2011. A member of the First United Methodist Church, Jolene made the best dish scrubbies that she donated to benefit the United Methodist Annual Bazaar. She was an excellent seamstress and made her daughter's wedding dresses and made many baby blankets for her grandchildren. Jolene had a servants heart and she volunteered at Olton's Sandcrawl Museum and for the Olton Volunteer Ambulance Association. She also served as the City of Olton's Municipal Court Judge in the late 1970's. Jolene moved to Levelland in 2011 where she developed a passion for reading and keeping up with friends and family on Facebook. A beloved mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Jolene will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Freddie Bob Burgess in 1977, a sister, Nora Lee Robertson, a brother, Kent Wozencraft, and her sister-in-law, Kathy Hyman.
Survivors include her daughters, Sherry Rust and her husband Duane of Levelland, Janice Griffin of Lubbock, and Danette Burgess of Levelland, and her brother, Max Wozencraft of Riverside, CA. She was blessed with five grandchildren: Michael Rust and his wife Ashley, Brandy Williamson and her husband Brian, Justin Griffin, Jared Rust and his wife Kortney, and Dereck Burgess and his wife Sunnye, and seven great-grandchildren: Brianna, Gavin, Brylee, Stetson, Kinsley, Kaeson, and Sterling.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Olton Volunteer Ambulance Association PO Box 1087 Olton, Texas 79064 or the Olton Cemetery Association PO Box 1055 Olton, Texas 79064.
