Lauis Hair, 98, of Olton, passed away in Plano, Texas on November 4, 2013. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 8 at the First United Methodist Church in Olton with Rev. Tom Carter officiating. Interment will follow at Olton Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends Thursday, November 7 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Ramage Funeral Directors in Olton.

Hair was born in Bulcher, Texas on August 27, 1915 to R.P. and Ora Hair. In 1920, the Hair family moved to Olton, where they owned and operated a general merchandise store. Lauis worked in the family store and graduated from Olton High School in 1933. He attended Texas Tech, where he played football for one year. He married his longtime sweetheart Ruth Dennis on January 14, 1938. Lauis and Ruth were married for 66 years.

From 1937 to 1944, Hair served as Deputy Tax Assessor-Collector to Roy Gilbert, I.B. "Doc" Holt, and Troy Cummings at the Lamb County Courthouse then located in Olton. He also served as OHS football coach in 1942 and 1943. He joined the Olton State Bank as Cashier in 1944 and served in that capacity until 1952. From 1952 until 1957, Hair and C.S. "Shorty" Silcott owned and operated Farmers Gin in north Olton. He rejoined the Olton State Bank in 1962 as Vice President and Director until his retirement in 1984. He was also a Director of Muleshoe State Bank in Muleshoe and Security State Bank in Littlefield.

Hair was an active member, and one of the oldest members, at the First United Methodist Church in Olton. He was a member of the Olton Eastern Star, a past master of the Olton Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Lubbock Scottish Rite and Amarillo Khiva Temple.
Hair served as president of the Olton School Board. He was a charter member and served twice as president of the Olton Lions Club and was Zone Chairman and Deputy District Governor. He received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest honor given to a Lions member in 1994, and was recognized for 66 years of service in 2006.

Hair was Clerk of the Olton FFA-4H Stock Show for 60 years, and the Show was dedicated to him in 1968. A charter member of the Olton Country Club, he was an avid golfer, and the annual Jack-and-Jill Golf Tournament was renamed for him and his wife Ruth in 2006. At the age of 81, he won the West Texas-Eastern New Mexico Golf Association Championship for his age group. At the age of 83, he won the Texas State Championship for his age group. He is credited with three Holes-In-One at the Olton course.

Hair was inducted into the Olton High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976 and was named Citizen Through the Years by the Chamber of Commerce in 1982. He and his wife, Ruth, were named Citizens Through the Years by the Chamber in 2001. He and Ruth served as King and Queen of the annual Olton Sandhills Celebration in 1995. Lauis was the oldest male pioneer attendee there for several years.
Lauis and Ruth loved to dance and were members of the Calendar Club at Plainview Country Club for many years. They also enjoyed attending the activities of their grandchildren. They loved to travel and took many trips all over the world.

Hair was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; a son-in-law, Leon Kendall; his parents; 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

He is survived by 4 daughters: Sydney (Gary) Smith of McKinney, Lana (Ken) Prestridge of Monroeville, Alabama, Phyllis (Ronald) Fancher of Plano, and Pamela Kendall of Plainview; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
