Obituary

Raymond "Cotton" Lewis, 88, of Olton, died Tuesday, September 30, 2014, in Olton. Services will be at 3:30 P.M., Saturday, October 4, at the First Baptist Church in Olton with Brother David Azam officiating. Interment will follow at Olton Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors.

Cotton was born March 17, 1926, in Anton, Texas to Thomas and Idell (Gore)Lewis. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. On November 4, 1950, he married Gailya Lilley in Clovis, N.M. Moving to Olton in 1954, Cotton farmed until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the Olton Masonic Lodge #1247 and the First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. Cotton was very involved in community activities. He served as director of the Olton Chamber of Commerce for two terms, director at Olton Coop Gin for 8 years, director of the Federal Land Bank of Littlefield for 12 years, director of Lamb County Soil and Water Conservation District for 26 years and was a founding trustee for a nine county MHMR where he served 26 years. He was honored as "Farmer of the Year" in 1973 and "Citizen through the Years" in 2008. He sponsors the Tommy Lewis Memorial Award at the Olton Stock Show and the 1995 Olton Stock Show was dedicated in his honor. Known for his talent in writing, Cotton was the author of four books and a member of the World Poet's Society.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Lewis, in 1984, three brothers, Jesse Lewis, Earl Lewis, and Walter Lewis, and one sister, Trudy Pointer.

Survivors include his wife, Gailya Lewis of Olton, his daughter, Karen Lewis of Olton, two brothers, Elmer Lewis of Olton and Charles Lewis of Amarillo, and a sister, Mary Epstein of Denver. He was blessed with two grandsons, Coby Livesay of Enid, OK, and Clayton Livesay of Olton and five great-grandchildren: Whitney, Tommy, Chase, Dyllan, and Loran Beth.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, October 3, 2014.
