Steve Spain, 73, of Olton, died Saturday, March 25, 2023, after a day of work in Olton. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church, in Olton, with Pastor Anthony Longoria and Pastor Paul Cypert officiating. Interment will follow at Olton Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors. Viewing will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 28 and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Ramage Funeral Directors.
Donald Stephen Spain was born January 4, 1950, in Amherst, Texas, to Don and Susie (Teal) Spain. A 1968 graduate of Olton High School, Steve earned his Bachelor of Science degree in soil services from Texas Tech University in 1972. Being a Ford Mustang enthusiast, Steve was a member of The Mustang Club of America and still owned his first 1967 green Mustang from high school. Steve married the love of his life, Debby Collins, on February 6, 1982, in Lubbock, and they were married 41 years. A lifetime Olton resident, Steve was a farmer/rancher that also helped manage the family business, Olton Farm Supply, from 1985 to 2003. A tenacious man that was persistent to a fault, Steve would tackle projects with innovative approaches. Whether he was moving old farmhouses across the county to rebuilding or developing novel farming practices; Steve met life's challenges with a unique perspective and tirelessly sought to bring out the best in people and projects.
Steve was a strong man of faith and character. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Olton and member of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Plainview. A seeker of knowledge and wisdom, Steve was constantly reading and studying. He was the spiritual leader of his family and left a legacy of love for them to follow. He was a gentle giant in his walk with Jesus Christ giving his children a generational blessing. Steve was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. He will be missed deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Susie Spain.
Survivors include his wife, Debby Spain of Olton, his sons, Collin Spain and his wife Erin of Midland and Trevor Spain of Olton, his daughter, Veronica Smith and her husband, Jordan of Round Rock, his brother, Robin Spain and his wife Jacquie of Olton, and his sisters, Jo Ellen Cowart and her husband Barry of Muleshoe and Janet Spain of Lubbock. He was blessed with eight grandchildren: Addy, Lauren, Eli, Remington, Avery, Sidney, Naomi, and Joni.
