Obituary

Weyland Worth Snipes, 85, of Hale Center, died Tuesday, February 19, 2019, in Lubbock.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 22, 2019, at the First Baptist Church in Hale Center with Dr. Kris Knippa and Dr. Gene Meacham officiating.  Interment will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 23, 2019, at May Cemetery in May, Texas with Brother Benny Mayo officiating and under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors.

Weyland Worth Snipes was born March 14, 1933 in May, a small community in Brown County, Texas, to Worth and Ileta Belle (Drinkard) Snipes. Weyland grew up in Brownwood and Early, Texas and graduated from Early High school, where he lettered in football, was the President of the FFA, and was chosen to attend Boy's State in Austin. As his secondary education, Weyland graduated with a Major in History, and a minor in Bible from Howard Payne College, where he was Class President of the Junior and Senior class, elected Senior Class Favorite, and listed in Who's Who in American Colleges, and Universities. While a freshman at Howard Payne, Weyland met Patti Marie Steward of Dallas, Texas, an Elementary Education student, also a Freshman, but two years his junior. They soon became an item, and were married in 1956 in North Dallas Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas.

While Patti taught in Fort Worth, Weyland attended Southwestern Baptist Seminary for a year, but settled on a career in education. Weyland's work career began as an Elementary school principal in McCamey, Texas, during which time, the family spent their summers living in Dallas while Weyland earned his Masters degree in Education from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. It was also during this time, that daughter Traci was born. Weyland then would become a primary principal in Garden City, Texas and a High School principal in Mountainaire, New Mexico, where son David Scott, and daughter Carol Lea were born. After working as the High School principal in Bloomfield, New Mexico, Weyland and Patti moved to Desoto, Texas as he went to work for his Father-in-Law, H.N. Steward, as a Draftsman, and Estimator at Center Construction, of Dallas, Texas, which built store interiors for malls all over the United States. After H.N.'s retirement, Weyland resumed his educational career as High School principal in White Deer, Texas, and finished, as a Junior High/Elementary principal in Hale Center, Texas, where he later was named the school district's Business Manager until his retirement in 1992. Retirement did not agree with Weyland, so, to stay busy until Patti retired, he worked for James Robinson, Architect, of Plainview, TX as a Draftsman.  During his working years, Weyland was involved in Lions Club, FFA, Hale Center Senior Citizens, and was the Theatre Director for numerous of his schools.

Weyland and Patti have lived in Hale Center for 40 years, and have been members of the First Baptist Church there for the same time period. Through 62 years of a beautiful marriage, Weyland and Patti managed to raise three children who were blessed by the many wondrous places the family lived, as well as by the wonderful people that moved in and out of their lives. To his children, Weyland was our provider, our expert repairman, our math teacher, our wilderness guide, and together with our mother, and grandparents, the foundation of our faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ. PawPaw, to his grandchildren, was a camp host, fly-fishing guide, ice-cream buddy, thumb-war champ, and… again, a rock that we forged our faith against.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7
